Sonia RomanLanguage Arts and History Sonia Roman has worked with students of all ages for over 20 years. She has taught elementary, high school, and college level courses. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from UCLA in 1987, her M.A. in History from UCLA in 1992, and in 1996 her M.A. from UCSB in Religious Studies. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education at UCSB. Ms. Roman founded the Emerson Academy in response to several requests by parents to set up a school with a humanistic approach dedicated to promoting student-centered learning in a compassionate setting.
Jeff RobbinsMath and Sciences Jeff Robbins received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UCLA in 1993, and has spent over 20 years instructing children of all levels in math and sciences using his relaxed but precise style. Jeff has been with The Emerson Academy since 2001 and is considered an invaluable asset by both staff and students alike.
Karen GoldenPerforming Arts A nationally-acclaimed storyteller and writer, Karen has been teaching at the Emerson Academy for four years and helps prepare the students for our end of the year storytelling concert. Karen teaches the art of storytelling, public speaking and oral communication skills at a variety of schools and universities around Los Angeles County.
Darren FraleArt Instructor Darren is a teacher and artist and holds a BA degree from the University of Wisconsin. Since receiving his degree he has continued his education in the arts and has completed more than 30 additional college-level courses in glass, design and ceramics. Darren is an accomplished glass artist and has nearly a decade of experience and has a varied portfolio of work, often mixing various techniques in the process of creating new pieces. Darren has a genuine passion for teaching art and he inspires and strives to motivate his students to learn about materials, techniques, crafts and artists.
